The Healing Crisis
_To Know or Not to Know
_People
have a tendency of not wanting to know about unpleasant things. And so I
asked myself, should I write about the healing crisis or not? Clearly
it would be counter-productive if the fear of a resulting healing crisis
kept people away from much needed healing.
It is also a fact that the messenger who brings an unpleasant message
is seldom rewarded. The hard truth doesn't sell, while sweet lies
usually do. Telling the truth about the healing crisis or even just mentioning it could cause potential clients to see a healer who promises healing without crisis. Know that such a promise is empty, for when there is truly deep healing
some form of crisis is almost inevitable. But also know that there are
ways of making the healing crisis much easier, shorter and more
tolerable. It doesn't have to be horrible at all -- it all depends on
your attitude.
What convinced me to finally write about the healing crisis was the knowledge that this information could help many to suffer less, another factor was my commitment to truth, and the fact that I wish I had known BEFORE it hit me! Do unto others as you wish them to do unto you, is my motto. And I really wish I had been told...

Do unto others as you wish them to do unto you, is my motto. And I really wish I had been told...
_My First Healing Crisis: a Nightmare!
_When
it struck me I was totally unprepared. I woke up one morning with
severe vertigo. It felt as if the ground was opening underneath me and I
was falling into an abyss backwards and head first. It tore me out of
sleep but waking was not any better. Everything rotated. I could not get
up for at least 15 minutes. Finally I managed to get up and walk around
but any turning of my head or lying down, reclining or bending forward
would trigger it again. And lying down couldn't be avoided because I was
on a healing course which involved long hours of sitting still or lying
down while giving and receiving healing.
What I found even worse than the vertigo was the extreme nausea. For
three days I was unable to eat. The few berries I got into my stomach I
threw up again within minutes. I had diarrhoea and frequent bouts of
nausea. I could hardly stagger over the meadow of the campsite where I
stayed to reach the toilets. Then I had attacks of freezing cold where I
lay in my tent in summer in the midday sun in an Arctic sleeping bag
made for -10 degrees conditions wearing thick clothing and a hooded
jacket (!) and still I was freezing cold while I released countless entities. I could probably have cooked an egg in the heat of my tent, but I felt as cold as if I was naked at the North Pole!
The emotional side of the crisis was also quite difficult. I was afraid of lying down, because it might trigger another extreme vertigo attack, which I thought was scarier than skydiving (something I have experienced). I was afraid to eat or even drink water, lest the nausea get worse. I was afraid to sleep, because of the vertigo. I felt helpless and not in control. The people around me weren't particularly helpful and I didn't ask for help, as I was used to be strong and doing everything on my own. How I managed, I don't know. But somehow I did manage though I felt awful day and night.

_A Lesson of Compassion
_After
three full days of this and the fourth day dawning with no improvement I
was finally totally fed up and aired my frustration. One of the
workshop participants thereupon told me to "stop making such a fuss
about a "tiny healing crisis". I was furious but didn't reply. And as is
usually the case when I get really furious -- which fortunately is rare
-- things start to happen. A few hours later the judgemental man
himself had a terrible healing crisis. And guess what: he had to be
carried to the toilet by two other men -- I managed without help in
spite of vertigo. There he relieved himself simultaneously from both
ends, so I was later told. After spending hours in the bathroom, much to
the dismay of the campsite owner he spent the night on the tent floor
shivering, freezing and shaking with fear whilst constantly muttering
about entities.
Though we comforted him and kept him company he was scared out of his
wits. He never said anything about "tiny healing crisis" again. In fact
he fled soon after and didn't want to hear anything about shamanism or entities ever again! I feel the spirits taught him a tough lesson of compassion!
_Judgement and Healing
_These
two just won't go together at all. Where there is judgement there is no
healing. It is a fact that no healing can take place in a judgemental
environment. Healing needs love for fuel and where there is judgement
there is no love and no compassion. Sadly I have found only too often
that people on so called healing workshops
and in spiritual circles behave very judgemental and unloving to
others. It is very sad indeed if we cannot let another human being have
the space, compassion, love and understanding they need to heal. I have
had to exclude people from workshops and ceremonies
because of judgementalism. Everybody talks about unconditional love,
especially in New Age circles, but I have seen few put it in practice. A
true healer has to be able to put personal feelings and prejudice aside
and see the seeker of healing as a spirit soul in need of healing
nothing more and nothing less. It is easy to laugh at others' healing
crisis, but will you still laugh when it hits you really badly? Don't
judge, lest you be judged yourself, I say!
_Common Questions
_Here are some of the most common questions on the healing crisis and the answers in short.
We will examine the healing crisis much more in-depth below.
Q: As far as I know not every healing triggers a healing crisis. So why is this?
A: Only deep healing and great transformation triggers a healing crisis. Alternatively great resistance can cause a healing crisis or you may be dealing with an attention seeker or a drama queen. But please do not judge people or yourself, because you could really hurt somebody who is going through a genuine healing crisis which can be very cathartic and hard to deal with. No need to give them more pressure, give them love and compassion, that is always best.
Q: Why do some people get one healing crisis after another and others never seem to get one?
A: Some people do very intense spiritual work and grow very fast. They tend to have more healing crises. Others have very deep trauma to work through and therefore tend to suffer more after healing.
Also, some people have a belief that they need to have a healing crisis or the healing wasn't good. Obviously they need to change their belief system to make it easier on themselves.
Q: Why do I sometimes get a healing crisis and other times not?
That depends on how deep the healing was and how great your resistance was. Also as you get the hang of transformative healing you learn to flow with the healing, like a surfer riding a large wave you stay on top of your emotions and the physical discomfort. That way you can pass through the healing crisis so smoothly that you hardly notice you had one!
Q: I was really sick for several days after the healing. Is there something wrong with the healer or the healing technique?
A: If you had a huge healing crisis you probably had a very powerful healing. It is most likely an indicator that the healer was competent and the healing technique worked great. Be grateful to the universe for helping you find such a healer or getting such deep healing from your self-healing work.
Remember that gratitude will bring you even more blessings!
Q: I have been feeling off ever since the healing which was months ago. Did something bad get into me?
A: Possibly. You might have fallen prey to a vampire or entities were transferred to you. Please read the Entities, Page and my article Vampires Suck! for more info! If you need help e-mail me! Alternatively you might not yet have dealt with the issues the healing crisis has brought up.
Q: Can the healing crisis be avoided?
A: In most cases no. But you can make it much easier for yourself by surrendering and observing.
Q: Is there any way to stop the healing crisis?
A: Yes, but I don't recommend it. Eat junk food and get drunk and it will probably stop -- however, you will get no healing either. The great transformation that has started within you will stop dead in its tracks. The universe was just about to build you stronger, but you gave it faulty construction material, so don't blame the healer if you didn't get well or end up with long-term problems due to abusing your body during a healing crisis.
Q: Is a healing crisis really necessary for deep healing?
A: Not absolutely. If we can totally surrender, stay on a pure diet, rest and learn the technique of growing without crisis, we don't need a healing crisis. Where there is zero resistance there is no pain. However, it is very difficult to let go of all resistance. It needs practice and deep faith!
Q: What is actually going on during a healing crisis?

A: Good question! You will understand the healing crisis much better when you see it as a
Rebirth
_It
may surprise you that the healing crisis is actually something very
positive. It is a rebirth and will ultimately make you much stronger. As
a rule, the greater the healing crisis, the greater the transformation.
So comfort yourself with that thought when you are in the midst of
suffering! Generally a healing crisis occurs when a big shift is being
made. You are basically being broken down and rebuilt in a better,
stronger way, as a more powerful you. The old you is dying and the new
you is being reborn like a phoenix from the ashes. And just as birth
usually involves pain and discomfort, this rebirth comes with its own
birth pangs.
The reasons why something in you may need to be broken down and be rebuilt instead of being healed in a less cathartic way can be complex. Your Higher Self will know them though you may not. In most cases it boils down to:
- Something has become so outdated or damaged that it couldn't be overhauled but had to be scrapped and something new created instead. This is similar to an old car that can no longer be fixed so a new one is bought.
- Something in you was too weak and needs to be replaced with something stronger -- the way a bone heals after fracture: the fracture site will be stronger than the bone originally was.
- You have grown so much spiritually that your whole being, your aura and energy field, your organs, nervous system, etc. needs to be upgraded so that you can handle greater cosmic energies flowing through you. This is akin to the wiring in your house being too weak for a higher voltage, so you rewire your house completely.
When you look at it this way the healing crisis is something very positive. It is an upgrade, an improvement, an empowerment, a great transformation or even a quantum shift. But occasionally it can also be a sign of great...

Resistance
_Let
me warn you: in case of a true healing crisis resistance is useless!
You will have to get through it somehow. The choice is yours whether
this will be kicking and screaming, or whether you pass through it
elegantly and with some dignity. Surrender is the key! I keep saying
this, because surrender is indeed the key for many things. Together with
love and trust it forms the foundation of spirituality.
The reason why some people get a healing crisis from even the mildest form of healing is that they have great resistance. My sensitivity as a healer is such that I can feel people's resistance to healing very acutely. I may not always tell them, because some can't handle the truth. But often what I perceive is confirmed by my guides, sometimes by the seekers of healing themselves. People will say: "I really want healing, I have no resistance to healing." But frequently they are lying to themselves. Yes, they want to get rid of the disease, the annoying symptom. But are they ready to face the root cause and take responsibility? Often the honest answer to this is "no"! Also people tend to have hidden agendas for keeping the problem in place, a pay off. For example, while your carpal tunnel syndrome persists you don't need to go back to work, or while you stay obese you can avoid entering into a relationship (fear of intimacy). Pay offs are a very common reason for not healing.

Unwillingness to Change
Even more common is fear of change or unwillingness to change. There is an old saying: it is better to stick to the devil you know than risk the one you don't know. Another reason for resistance is when during the healing issues come up which one doesn't want to face, because they are either too painful, or require a change of one's world view. In all these cases people may fight the change that is going on within them. They may try everything to not face up to what they need to face in order to be healed, to not having to feel the emotions they do not want to feel, and to not having to change. But when they fight the healing process the crisis gets more prolonged and much more painful, both physically and emotionally. The best strategy is to observe everything like an impartial witness knowing what you are experiencing is going to be temporary and is part of the process of transformation.
_Love of Drama
_Then
there are those who enjoy the drama and the attention if they get a big
healing crisis. And there are those that believe that they need to have a
healing crisis else it wasn't a good healing. So they manifest a huge
crisis. In short the attention seeker, the dramatic and the crisis
addict. I knew a lady who even feigned demonic possession to get
attention! She would writhe on the floor foaming from the mouth so that
people would see her and love her, as she told me later. You can
probably guess that this behaviour wasn't a very successful strategy to
make friends.... The games we play with others and ourselves are
sometimes truly absurd. What to do if you observe such behaviour in
others? Attention seekers and drama queens are best ignored. Don't play
their game but do not be cruel! They are damaged human beings or they
wouldn't be playing this game. But if you give them sympathy you make
their pattern worse and may lose your power on top of that. Some
attention seekers are energy vampires. You can read on my Vampire Page
how to deal with energy vampires. Should you notice such behaviour in
yourself there are two things to do: forgive yourself, then change!
Addiction of Pain
_ People
can have a real addiction to pain and suffering. This may not be
conscious so don't judge them for it. But whenever you see something
undesirable in others you should look deeply within if you find it in
yourself. As above so below, as within so without. If you find even the
slightest trace of pain addiction in yourself you should do your best
to weed it out and spare yourself much suffering!
There are different reasons why people are addicted to pain. Sometimes it is staying with what they know, with the familiar, as awful as it is, rather than facing the unknown, which is scary for most people. Sometimes it is ego wanting to be special, showing others "look how I am suffering. I am suffering more than anybody else." Meaning: "look how special I am!" This can be symptom of extremely low self confidence. Another reason for pain addiction can be an inner numbness that is so unpleasant that any feeling, even pain, is better than being numb. It is a desperate but misguided attempt of the soul to break out of numbness. You may be surprised to hear that on the scale of emotions pain is much closer to Oneness than numbness. The wish to experience pain can be a convoluted intent to return to Oneness.

_The Mechanics of the Healing Crisis
__During
a healing crisis all your bodies are being rearranged by higher
consciousness. What bodies? Well, it could be your physical body, your
mental body, your emotional body or your energy body, aka your body
of light, which includes the aura and the chakra system. Depending on
which of your bodies is getting the overhaul you may experience various
symptoms.
Physical body: you could develop a cold with runny nose or coughing. This is your body's attempt to throw out mucus and toxins from the respiratory tract. Digestive tract problems are quite common too. Diarrhoea is most common, sometimes it can be nausea and in rare cases vomiting. This is a cleansing process and you can speed it up by drinking freshly juiced fruit and vegetable juices and eating raw foods to support the detox. Some people will develop flu-like symptoms and even fever. Fever is an attempt of your body to "cook" invading micro-organism and burn off toxins. A headache that lasts for a few hours may occur, and various other symptoms depending on what organ or system in your body is experiencing the healing crisis. The most common side effect of physical healing is fatigue. The body wants rest and healthy raw food so it can repair itself.
Mental body: Your belief system and sometimes the brain are being rearranged. This can be challenging as many people hold on to their beliefs like a miser to a penny. Denial is the most common reaction in those who resist a mental body overhaul, as well as anger. ("How dare this healer tell me that..."). You may get a headache which may be caused by mental conflicts and denial. You may experience the resurfacing of buried memories with the accompanying turbulent emotions.
Sometimes there is greater clarity and you begin to see your suffering, your condition or disease from a different angle and become able to be more relaxed about it, less desperate and more surrendering, which is a positive sign and the first step to making healing possible. You may temporarily have poorer memory than usual or find rational mind activities such as calculation, recalling names and numbers, etc, quite difficult. As you are making a transition from the lower mind to the higher mind your mental faculties may temporarily suffer. Do not worry about this, you will end up smarter than you started off, not dumber!
If you have been under mind control you may now begin to break out of it, becoming aware of manipulation, remembering repressed incidents, and beginning to question what you were told or taught, maybe question even the nature of your reality or the way you live your life. It will all be for your ultimate good. Observe and stay calm. You may have increased mental activities with a multitude of thoughts assailing you, or you may feel dull and want to sleep all the time. Allow yourself to rest when your body and mind demand rest.
Emotional body: This is in many cases the hardest part. Emotions you have buried because they were too painful or unacceptable to you are surfacing to be experienced and released. You could find yourself furiously angry when you are normally patient and forgiving. You may be unspeakable sad or seriously depressed. Do not worry, it will pass. Do not drown your sorrow in alcohol or pop in pills, or you may abort the healing crisis, sabotaging your own healing! If you get a Kundalini type release of your emotions you will be totally unable to control them coming out. You may scream, cry and wail alternating with unstoppable laughter. Under these circumstances it is best to seek solitude until the storm has blown itself out lest you do or say something you regret later and lest others judge you by your irrational or rude behaviour! It is seldom so extreme, but if it happens, stay on your own and do your best to be the impartial witness of all your emotions. The storm will blow itself out, and as usual, after a storm everything will be clean and new.
Energy body: this can have manifold side effects that manifest themselves as temporary physical problems. Crawling or throbbing sensations, pain, nausea, dizziness are some of the possible side effects. If chakra content is being thrown out the effects depend on which of the chakras is affected. If it is the root chakra, for example, you may suddenly get affected by overwhelming lust -- even if you haven't felt that for decades. Heart chakra problems can involve extreme irregular heart beat. Don't panic, you will not die from it! I had this problem for over a year when my Kundalini rose to the heart chakra. I used to go to bed wondering whether I would see the next day -- but I never saw a doctor, knowing they would only make matters worse. It resolved itself in time and I am still alive! Stay calm or you may get a heart attack just from panic! Third eye chakra purging may cause you migraine-like headaches, crown chakra problems vertigo, etc. Whatever it is, just observe.

_Anchor in the Chaos
_No
matter what body or bodies are involved, the healing crisis serves to
throw out toxins, and purges you of dead materials and negative or
excessive energies. While this is going on you will be in chaos. Your
body may be going through chaos, or your mind and your emotions. You
need an anchor in the chaos. And that anchor is in the future, it is
what you wish to become. So while you go through the healing crisis keep
visualising and feeling the greater you, the healthier and wiser
you that you wish to become. Feel it as if it has already happened. Also
anchor yourself in your spirituality. Have faith that God/Goddess/All-That-Is will help you through this, that your Higher Self is with you. Repeat your mantra
or meditate if you feel capable of it, but don't force it if it is too
much for you. Sometimes all you need to do to heal is rest! When the
chaos becomes unbearable allow yourself to be in the eye of the storm
where there is calm. You cannot control the chaos, so let go, surrender
and centre yourself.
_Hope for the Best, Prepare for the Worst
Now you probably think the healing crisis sounds hellish! Admittedly it can feel like hell when you go through a very severe healing crisis but most people never experience such severe healing crises. Most people, if they have any healing crisis at all, may just experience a mild headache or feel a bit melancholic or sad for a couple of days, and then they feel better than ever. I had full blown Kundalini, but it took several years to work through the higher chakras. I had no problem getting the Kundalini to the heart chakra, but there it was stuck in a morass of trauma and pain for a long time.
Some of the experiences I went through I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I also had extreme headaches for 1 1/2 years, daily, yet I never took a pain killer. (By the way, one excellent natural aid to alleviate the healing crisis is the herb meadowsweet. ) Chances are you will never get such a severe healing crisis. But if you do, then at least you know you are not alone, you are not going to die from it, and you will know what to do to make it easier on yourself.

_Tips for Getting Through a Healing Crisis
_Eat right.
The best thing to do after a healing is to eat healthy. This means
organic raw food if possible. Avoid alcohol, drugs of any kind,
processed foods and sweets. Your body will need raw materials to rebuild
after defective cells and tissues have been broken down. The enzymes in
raw foods greatly speed up the healing process and make the healing
crisis a lot shorter.
Observation. Practice being the witness of your emotions and your mental patterns without identifying with them. If for example you feel stupid, don't think "I am stupid" but instead observe, "how interesting! A thought of being stupid has arisen!" If you feel angry don't judge yourself by thinking "I am an angry person" nor should you identify with the anger by saying to yourself "I am angry", nor will it help you to suppress the emotion. The most helpful attitude is to observe impartially and maybe with a certain amount of curiosity, remarking to yourself: "look at that! An emotion of anger has arisen!" Then observe the anger until it passes away. If you feel like punching somebody, don't give in to it, go for a sandbag! The same applies if you need to cry or scream: let it out, but make sure you are in a safe environment, if at all possible.
Solitude: If the crisis is severe or your emotions are chaotic it is best to have solitude. This prevents you from clashing with other people who could further disturb your already turbulent emotions. It also prevents you from antagonising friends in case you should lose your temper. Peace and rest greatly aid healing, so make use of them as much as possible.
Silence: much energy gets expended in the act of talking. Yogis know this therefore they often observe vows of silence. During the healing crisis you will need all your energy. If it is practical you may want to just be silent and not talk for a few days. At the very least don't engage in gossip and hour-long phone calls. It is better to be silent and look within. Talking often goes with rationalising. And rationalising is an attempt to avoid feeling unpleasant emotions. During a healing crisis you must embrace your pain rather than run from it. So don't talk about your pain, feel it! Silence also reduces the chance of arguments when you are already in a vulnerable state.
Rest. This is the best you can do for your body if you are feeling exhausted or fatigued during the healing crisis. Sleep may also help after a cathartic emotional release to get you back into balance. Often healing takes place while we sleep, sometimes even healing by your Higher Self or the Goddess can happen in your sleep. Ask for it and you will be given!
Face it. Try not to avoid any feeling, emotion or pain. If you take pain killers you just numb yourself out again. Also avoid numbing out through watching TV, playing computer games or drinking alcohol, etc. Don't run away from what is coming up by throwing yourself in hectic activity (workaholic), or go socialising and partying to distract yourself. Don't be a martyr and "help" others while you are going through your healing crisis, which maybe a covert attempt by your ego to cut your healing off so you can avoid changing. The ego doesn't like change at all. It wants to be in control.
Anchor yourself by visualising and feeling the future you that you want to create (see above). If you get lost in the chaos, and feel you can't cope, if you have thoughts of suicide, etc. try repeating some tested Yogic formulas such as "even this will pass away" or something like: "I am a spirit soul having a human experience, this is just an experience." Don't act on any destructive or self-destructive impulses.
Faith. Trust in yourself. You are greater than the crisis, greater than these emotions. Remind yourself it is for your highest good, even if it doesn't feel good. Pray to God/Goddess/All-that-Is or your chosen deity. Repeat your personal mantra with faith if you have been initiated into a mantra.
Surrender to the healing crisis. Surrender to the Goddess or God and let them heal you. Surrender to the wisdom of your Higher Self, who brought you to this healing and trust it will be good. Surrender to the pain if you have any. Surrender to the grief, sadness, anger or whatever emotion you are feeling and allow yourself to feel it fully without any resistance. Surrender is completely letting go of resistance. Surrender is also the letting go of judgement and aversion. If you hate the pain you make it worse. Embrace it, become it, let it pass through you without resistance and it will pass away.
Everything unpleasant will eventually pass away, leaving you fully healed and
Observation.
